Denis and Maria Moss
We are indebted to the work of the Canon Denis Moss. This site is based on his notes, sermons and philosophy. Father Denis Moss is a priest from the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, but now serves the Church of England as Chaplain in Budapest. He is a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter in the Diocese in Europe and is Area Dean of Central Europe. He is married to Maria who left Hungary at the time of the 1956 anti-Communist Revolution. They subsequently met and married in New Zealand.
Before becoming a priest Father Denis was an architect in private practice in New Zealand. He answered a call to priesthood through the auxiliary ministry scheme promoted by the Bishop of Auckland in the early 1970?s. His training was at St. John?s Theological College in Auckland from which college he gained the Licentiate in Theology. He has served in parishes in the Auckland Diocese and in Suva, Fiji. During the last ten years of his ministry in New Zealand he became active in ministry with alcoholics and drug addicts, working as Associate Priest and Co-ordinator of Alcohol Services at the Auckland Anglican City Mission. Concurrently he was Assistant Priest at St. Mark?s, Remuera and Anglican Chaplain to Auckland?s main Roman Catholic hospital. Fr. Denis believes in the healing power of God active in the Church. For many years he was the Chaplain to the Auckland Chapter of the Order of St. Luke the Physician, an international and interdenominational order whose mission is to restore Christ?s healing ministry to the Church.
While at Auckland City Mission Fr. Denis and Maria (who worked there with him) recognized gaps in the existing delivery systems of treatment for substance abusers. These were particularly evident at the vulnerable points before entering treatment and immediately after completion of a programmer. To assist with this situation Fr. Denis and Maria founded the Wings Rehabilitation Trust (1986 Inc.). This Christian charitable foundation now owns seven houses in Auckland and runs extremely successful programmers. It is the Auckland Hospital Board?s ?Preferred Service Provider?.
Fr. Moss?s call to Hungary came in 1989, and in 1992 he and Maria were finally able to take up residence in Budapest. The post was initially an experimental one subsidized by the Bishop in Europe for a limited period. Fr. Denis was able to guide the small group of Anglicans, who had worshipped under the protection of the British Embassy during the Communist era, through several years and critical situations, from a starting point where they had virtually nothing but faith and a vision, to the point where they now are a full parish of the Church of England, a registered Church under the laws of Hungary, and are on the point of owning a parish house and a chapel in the central area of Budapest. His wife, Maria, has played a major role in this; her knowledge of the language being invaluable. Concurrently they have established a charitable foundation, linked to the Church, and in spirit linked to their Wings Trust in New Zealand. It is the Szárnyak Alapítvány (Wings Foundation) which is principally now the vehicle for Maria?s ministry to prisoners in Budapest. She has active groups in drug and alcohol counseling, and is teaching English.
The next few years will see them giving much greater attention to ministry through the Foundation. Fr. Denis will retire from the Church in the foreseeable future and he would like to pursue an interest in spirituality through spiritual direction and courses in spiritual formation. Both Fr. Denis and Maria strongly believe that recovery from addiction and compulsive behavior is a spiritual process, that God is the healer.

Summary

In summary Biblon is an organization dedicated to promoting the Gospel via the internet. Our mission is to provide basic information to those searching for a Christian structure. The site is organized into clear units covering the Bible, Sacraments, The Church and the Anglican Communion. There is a section on some of the major Saints and a series of sermons from the Reverend Canon Denis Moss. In addition it is hoped that the site will act as a focus for charitable giving to the causes outlines. Finally Biblon can help you but there is no substitute for reading Scripture.
